François Maury was registered as a painter in 1876, at the age of 15, at 1 rue des Trois-Mages in Marseille. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, where he won the first prize for painting and drawing in 1880 and the Jules Cantini Prize the following year. He continued his artistic training at the Académie Julian in Paris. Between 1885 and 1905, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member, and at the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
